Coconut Oil and Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs)
Coconuts have nourished cultures around the world for thousands of years. On many islands coconut is an essential dietary staple. Among these cultures the coconut is revered.
Coconut oil is of special interest because of its healing properties and its extensive use in traditional medicine among Asian and Pacific populations. Pacific Islanders consider coconut oil to be the cure for all illness, and the coconut palm is called "The Tree of Life." In recent years, science has unlocked the secrets to coconut's amazing healing powers.
Coconuts and Traditional Healing
In traditional medicine around the world coconut is used to treat a wide variety of health problems. These include abscesses, asthma, baldness, bronchitis, bruises, burns, colds, constipation, cough, dropsy, dysentery, earache, fever, flu, gingivitis, gonorrhea, irregular or painful menstruation, jaundice, kidney stones, lice, malnutrition, nausea, rash, scabies, scurvy, skin infections, sore throat, swelling, syphilis, toothache, tuberculosis, tumors, typhoid, ulcers, upset stomach, weakness, and wounds.
Modern medical science has confirmed the use of coconut in treating many of the above conditions. Published studies in medical journals show that coconut, in one form or another, may provide a wide range of health benefits.
Coconut Oil and Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs)
Once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, we now know that coconut oil is a uniquely healthy food. Coconut oil has been described as "the healthiest oil on earth." What makes coconut oil so good? Simply, it is the high concentration of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) found in coconut oil.
MCFAs are unique fat molecules, and by far the best source of MCFAs is unrefined, virgin coconut oil.. The vast majority of fats and oils, whether saturated or unsaturated, from animals or plants, are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). The size of fatty acids is extremely important, because the human body responds to and metabolizes fatty acids differently depending on their size. MCFAs have uniquely beneficial physiological effects.
How Dr. Ron’s Organic, Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil is Made
Fresh organic coconut meat is quick-dried. The meat is then cold-pressd to mechanically extract the oil. Some retailers and manufacturers using this same process call their coconut oil "Extra Virgin Coconut Oil." But this classification is meaningless, simply a marketing ploy, because there is no official classification or difference between "virgin" and "extra virgin" for coconut oil.
When you open a container of Dr. Ron’s Coconut Oil, you’ll notice the subtle sweet fragrance of fresh coconuts, and the wonderful taste. Quality coconut oil is great in cooking – it is not significantly altered by moderate heat. It is an outstanding food supplement, and may be beneficially used in quantities from a teaspoon up to as many as four or five tablespoons a day in special situations. Coconut oil is also great for massage, as a skin lotion, and for a degree of protection from the sun.
