The Many Benefits of Krill Oil

Krill oil, harvested from Antarctic krill, tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that live in cold ocean waters, is the most exciting new food supplement we have found in many years. Rich in DHA, EPA, the unique antioxidant astaxanthin, and a host of other nutrients, krill is the perfect complementary oil to our cod liver oil.

Scientists and physicians have discovered that krill oil has multiple benefits. Krill oil enhances mood, strengthens the heart, and improves cognitive function, while reducing inflammation, pain and stiffness. It is rich in DHA, the fatty acid that makes up some sixty percent of brain tissue.

This is why krill helps brain function - studies have shown significant improvement in concentration, mental function and memory after ninety days of taking krill oil supplements. Taken together, the nutrients in cod liver oil and krill oil may help prevent the mental decline typically associated with aging. Note, it is important to balance cod liver oil, butter oil or ghee and vitamin K2. See my recommended doses of these oils

Krill Oil for Premenstrual Syndrome

In 2002, physicians at the University of Montreal , McGill University , and other medical centers in Quebec conducted a randomized, double-blind study, published in 2003 in the Alternative Medicine Review, about the use of krill oil for relieving premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In the three months of the study, various symptoms (breast tenderness, stress, irritability, depression, joint pain, weight gain, swelling, bloating) were reduced by anywhere from 21% to 64%. Participants took 2,000 mg of krill oil daily. A control group took a fish oil supplement daily. While that group showed mild changes, by far the most remarkable improvements occurred in the women taking krill oil. Many women reported complete disappearance of all their physical and emotional symptoms.

The researchers credited the trial's dramatic results to krill oil's unique biochemical profile of fatty acids, phospholipids and antioxidants, which appear to work synergistically to reduce the underlying causes of most PMS symptoms. Brain neurotransmitters are affected as well, enhancing mood and relieving emotional and psychological symptoms. The researchers concluded with "a high level of confidence" that krill oil "can significantly reduce the physical and emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome."

More Benefits of Krill Oil

Researchers have attributed benefits to the unique molecular composition of krill oil. Numerous published studies have shown krill oil to have significant beneficial effects on skin and appearance, hair and nails, energy, concentration and focus. The wide range of benefits demonstrates convincingly that one or two thousand milligrams of krill oil should be a mainstay of the daily diet.
